Wish i could back and tell them Raise the roof by 2 feet
what an absolutely beautiful story and adventure. RIP to both Melvin and Ethel Ross. i can only hope to emulate the everpersistant urge to further explore as you both once did.
my kokum at 6:42
Life is so short and so beautiful, we must explore and share for the sake of ourselves
He and his wife found the lost valley of gold. That was real gold he found. Myself was a prospector and can tell you, they found it.
So Gretzky does in one year in Jr what most do in three! Messier is on the other team (Cincinatti) as #27 at the end.
Love this thank you for sharing. God Bless you
kind of sad to think a lot of these buildings are now gone/ i'm only glad they kept the Canada packers smoke stack when they built the new ( ugly) bus garage
Said goodbye to my aunt, uncle , their three kids at the CPR station in 1959 .They were going back to England by steamer. Things weren't working out at the Swift's plant. Ultimately Australia's gain.
I still remember Carl Nichols giving the weekly drilling report commenting. The great importance the future development of the sands. Syncrude pilot plant was in infancy and plagued with technical stills. The eventual success of the industry has been a cornerstone of the Canadian economy for years. Canada manpower and national immigration programs have benefited greatly for years. I've seen and enjoyed watching Alberta's cities flourish because of this prosperity all my life. Carl should have a statue or something as a tribute.
Great job!
About 5 years before my time. The train stations, department stores , Famers market, Post Office were still up but street cars and old trolleys gone. Saw the coolest veterans parade in 1962. Even the WW1 vets were well represented. Lots of marchers.
Wow. A white man has mapped and charted the lands of the Upper Canadian landscape. Is that a Sin? Is that bad? Is that against Canadian law?
I mean that in a very satirical and Political manner. Read into it, Folks.
There has been 5 generational players in my lifetime. Two played for Edmonton, two played for Pittsburgh and one for Boston. Suck it Calgary.
You could literally torture someone to death with this man's voice, my god....
This is the coolest thing I've ever found on youtube.
Losing all that gold would've had me sulking the whole way back lol. In today's gold prices that looked like well over $100,000 US dollars if I'm not mistaken.
Damn did that strawberry shortcake look epically delicious!
A lot of people take for granted that they were alone on this trip with no film crew. So every shot you see was tons of extra work climbing, canoeing, walking and then having to go back to retrieve the camera and retrace their steps once again. A very exhausting process. Praise be to you Mr. & Mrs. Ross, up there in Valhalla!
Reminds me of some of the filmstrips that we would watch in elementary school during the mid to late 1980's.
I caught the tail-end of this lifestyle..grew up on the trapline till I was 16 years old. I am 54 years old now but my heart is still on the trapline
Fascinating documentary however the narration is hard to listen to, no disrespect to the man but someone else should have narrated
Me too. It's like he has marbles in his mouth.
One of the oldest bridges of its size in the world
That was awesome, i feel like ive been there now
What an amazing journey and testimony to the knowledge and courage of the human desire for the love of adventures which is what life is all about , experiences and adventures are the spirit and braveness of humanity. God bless these people for there sharing all this with us.
As a miner that is just starting a youtube himself I absolutely love this. I watched this years ago as well and am very tempted to head up there myself. I just pray one day I will find my ethel.
Those were mamoth drawings! That's ANCIENT cave art or someone (likely) is playing a game with us. It seems too good to be true. If it is true, those caves need heavy-duty exploring and investigation. A greater find than anything Europe has produced by far. 🤔🤯😳🫡🤠
And people think the government know everything out there and nobody’s ever stepped foot out there 100,000 of miles only on the rivers.
Ha, If those are lynx tracks it must have suffered from gigantic disease. I have read there are out sized beasts in the McKenzie valley. .
Oh boy. When they lost the pack with the food and gold I felt devastated for them.
My dad is in his nineties now and he will enjoy watching this with me. Over the years I have heard many stories of his time as a boy and a teenager. I have been looking for videos from the time when he was growing up in Beverly/Edmonton and this video hits the mark. If I had one minor criticism it would be that someone could overlay some labels about what the various images are. I remember the giant milk bottle. I recognize many of the structures. I think that maybe some of the homes are from the Highlands community…maybe? I do wish that it had been economically viable to preserve a bit more of the buildings in the video that no longer exist, but what can you do? Note that downtown was more vibrant in days gone by. But there are many things that are better than they once were too. What a world! (Twenty years from now, when climate change brings worldwide economic collapse, 2024 will live dearly in the survivors’ hearts too. But then again, survivors will just be happy to have fresh water and food that is not human flesh. 😁) Thank you so much for posting this. This is great! Major Kudos go out to all the Edmontonians of the past and present who have had the foresight to preserve our glorious river valley. The video reveals that, while much has changed over the past eighty plus years, our river valley looks much the same today as it did then. Because whenever developers have tried to to “enhance”/dismantle our river valley piece by piece, we have told them to take a hike, Edmonton has one of the greatest urban park systems in the world.
I have so much respect for them. The video was so well put together and nothing like that could be re-created today. It wouldn’t have the same feeling at all.
Love how they kept the myth of you will lose the gold you try to take out of Hidden Valley.
Rabbit fur
This is cool. My father attended Vic in the late forties. A fascinating capture of time during that era.
McDougall School was nerby as well. Opposite the Armory.
Ok
I can't understand half of what the narrator is saying.
An amazing film. A tremendous & happy discovery. I've learned more about canoe tripping and survival back before the Mountain Equipment Co-op. (MEC). His narrative is absolutely genuine and genius. Filming and melting lead to repair a busted prop on an outboard! That was life and death. Trapping is a winter activity and no one's up there to rescue you. Running water for the tub...and refrigerator. What a joy when i remembered coming across wild strawberry patches. As kids we'd sit and talk while shoveling our mouths with strawberries. Warmed by the sun, the flavour was double that of the domestically, big berries. Quantity over quality. The smell is still in my nose memory. Portages are generally miserable because you know you'll have to turn around and gather up the gear. The rapid joke made me laugh out loud. And this married couple's motivation was pure educational and not about likes or subs. Definitely 💯 enjoyment. His dry humour catches you unaware but then you get it. And it's Bob Newhart all over again.
This film is an absolute treasure. I can't believe I've never come across it before. The storing of steak in shortening is something I've never heard of before. That old-school wisdom in the wilderness is priceless to me. What lives so well lived. Awesome.
Wonderful documentary! Sat in the parking lot through it all . Thanks for sharing your experience. I felt as if i too was there with both of you.
I spent my younger years growing up in Riverdale and at 13 worked at Family drugs on 97st. & Jasper Ave. The Coffee Cup was across the street on the left and W W Arcade was on the other. No liquor sales on Sunday so I sold rubbies rubbing alcohol for a dollar a bottle. We made a killing, Ah the good old days
Drug stores sold booze than?
Ah, The Coffee Cup! My dad often took me to WW Arcade when we were looking for camping or fishing gear, but I had forgotten about The Coffee Cup.
This guy makes the best jokes, he's hilarious 😂
Incredible! Thank you for sharing, loved every second of it.
Like I told my kids…..if a place is named with some creepy title or folk legend name that sounds ominous…..don’t go there! Period full stop. 😏
Ah...a time of such innocence. We still believed that the sky was the limit for resources; that we would be on other planets in just a few decades, that the "pie" was big enough for everyond to get a piece- and that our kids and grandchildren would have even better lives than this. Wow...
What a pleasure to listen to a fine elderly gentleman. The adventure I just listened too was amazing, the details, the words used to emphasize. I really felt I could of been there, you truly are a blessed man to have such a strong woman with you. I do believe there are parts of this world still untouched, still set back in time. If one finds such a place, respect it, for its secrets owe you nothing .. Thank you sir
I couldn't understand half of what he was saying but it was still a good watch. Was it actually gold that they found?

Arctic Grayling are bony fish but tasty too. Hand fishing is a lot of fun! Dolly Varden Fish are the prettiest of the anadrimous, Trout species. Pearlescent white, with orange spots. Rainbow hues in the scales. They are tasty 2. Yummy!
